“Capt. William Avinger and the freight boat “Emma” arrives Charleston from Vance, SC laden with 103 bales of cotton” (Charleston Mercury December 24, 1851).
So a legacy began, from serving the maritime needs of Carolina Plantations in the 1800’s, phosphate mines at the turn of the century, to years of transporting freight, passengers and mail for communities along the Low Country rivers. As times changed, the mid century brought commercial fishing, ship repair, boat building and coastal towing. For over 150 years every generation has been represented on the Low Country waterways. In continuing this tradition, KMD Marine was founded in 1985 to serve the marine industry and maintain this family commitment.
KMD has provided vessels to support inland and offshore transportation services for military, construction, dredging, and research projects along the East and Gulf Coast as well as the Caribbean Islands. With the 7th generation of watermen now coming onboard, KMD is dedicated to providing quality marine services for many generations to come.
Just as the Planters entrusted Capt. William Avinger and the “Emma” with their livelihoods in the 1800’s, you can be assured KMD Marine will honor their trust through our commitment of excellence to the maritime community.
